How long does your soap last?
It will vary depending on your frequency of usage, lather, and whether you have soft or hard water. Most customers find they last over a month with daily use.
For longer lasting soap, we recommend using a soap saver dish with openings on the bottom to let excess water drain. Allow your soap to dry in between uses. You can also cut the bars in half. Keep half in the shower/tub for regular use and store the other half in a cool, dry place until the first half is used.
A sponge or loofah, rather than a wash cloth, really helps bring out the soap’s lather while using less product.
When your soap gets small or breaks into pieces, we recommend using a soap bag or pouch for the soap scraps. This ensures that you’re able to use every last bit of your soap and it reduces product waste. They also do a nice job of exfoliating so you get even smoother skin.
Do your products cure eczema/acne/etc?
In order to claim healing properties for our products, we would have to go through extensive testing and become approved as a drug through the FDA. Any product that claims it treats acne, eczema, psoriasis or any health condition, is regulated as a drug, not a cosmetic.
Do you test on animals? Are your products vegan?
We never test products on animals. The majority of our products are all vegan. We do, however, use goat milk for our lotions and beeswax/honey in our lip balms and some soaps.
Do you use Palm Oil? What is RSPO Palm Oil?
Sustainable palm oil is also referred to as RSPO, CSPO, and CSPKO. It’s palm oil that’s produced by palm oil plantations which have been independently audited and certified against the RSPO (Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil) standard. The RSPO was founded in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2004.
Root is committed to the reduction of adverse effects on the environment. In order to maintain that standard, we ONLY use palm oil from suppliers that are RSPO certified.
Can you just use another oil instead of palm oil?
We’ve asked ourselves the same question. While that seems like a simple solution, replacing palm oil with another vegetable oil (e.g. rape seed, sunflower seed, soybean oil) doesn’t ensure sustainable practices. These oils would still have to be produced agriculturally and require even more land to produce than palm oil.
Palms produce more oil concentration per plant and they grow taller (they take up more vertical space rather than horizontal land). Palm oil requires half as much land as soybean oil.
Knowing your product is RSPO is important because palm oil is in so many everyday products, not just soap. For example, it’s in ice cream, cosmetics, and cookies! Instead of taking the time to inform consumers, a lot of companies just slap on a label that says “vegetable oils” and call it a day.
Rather than pass the problem onto another crop (or another region) and stay silent about this issue, we decided to use RSPO oil and take this opportunity to educate and inform consumers on the importance of knowing what goes into products.
Do you accept custom orders?
Yes! Please send us an email email@example.com and tell us about your event, timeline, and budget. Since we make everything in small batches, we generally need a few weeks for larger soap orders so the soaps can cure.
